NextGenAMR is a student-led network for those researching Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), as well as for students eager to learn and connect across disciplines and institutions. Our mission is to bring together students who are either working directly or indirectly on AMR or are simply passionate about understanding more, empowering them to take an active role in addressing this global challenge.
As the next generation of scientists, researchers, and changemakers, we believe it is our responsibility to tackle this silent pandemic through collaboration, education, and action.
NextGenAMR was founded by two EastBio DTP students, Ava Drake (University of Stirling) and Larissa Melo Chicoski (Scotland's Rural College), who recognised a clear gap, the lack of a strong, student-led UK network focused on cross-sector collaboration to address the impacts of AMR across environmental, animal, and human health. Seeing this as an opportunity, we created a platform where students of multiple levels and diverse academic backgrounds can lead the conversation on AMR and contribute to shaping its future.
Whether you're researching microbiology, pharmacology, infectious disease, novel diagnostics, genomics and bioinformatics, epidemiology, surveillance, health policy, economics or if your work relates to AMR and has the potential to impact human, animal, or environmental health, this network is for you!
The EastBio Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) is a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) funded PhD training programme that brings together leading research institutions across the East of Scotland, an important region in the UK for life sciences. EastBio supports interdisciplinary research in biosciences, with a strong emphasis on collaboration between institutions, students and projects, world-class interdisciplinary training, and real world impact.
We are supported by the EastBio DTP. Our cohort brings together students of leading academic and industrial institutions across Scotland: University of Edinburgh, University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee, University of St Andrews, University of Stirling, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), The James Hutton Institute, Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) and Moredun Research Institute. Also, Cool Farm Alliance and Scottish Universities Life Science Alliance (SULSA) are associate partners. While rooted in EastBio, the network welcomes students and early career researchers from across the UK and beyond.

Any student with an interest in AMR can join, whether you're studying it directly or just keen to learn more and connect with others. We welcome participants from all levels of study. However, please keep in mind that this network was primarily designed with PhD students in mind, which means that the activities may reflect that level of knowledge, time commitment, and scheduling.
Yes! You are more than welcome to help us or propose an activity to organize. If you're interested in getting more involved or have an idea for an activity you'd like to lead, please reach out to us. We’ll be happy to hear more about your interests and help you take the next steps.
Although all activities are designed to promote the exchange of experiences and deepen our knowledge in AMR, the network is also created to be flexible and align with your needs as a researcher. We understand that sometimes it’s not always possible to attend a session. Please feel free to participate in the activities that resonate most with you or best match your research interests and profile. That said, all activities were designed with you in mind as part of the intended audience, so you’re warmly welcome to join any or all of them!
Not at all! We welcome anyone curious about AMR. Whether you’re new to the topic or already researching it, there’s a place for you in the network.
